You know that feeling when the hair on the back of your neck stands up, the lights flicker, and you swear you felt a sudden chill? It’s easy to imagine you’re not alone, but before you reach for the sage and crystals, let’s consider a more earthly explanation—your HVAC system and insulation might be the real culprits.
Energy Flows Where Attention Goes
It’s a fundamental law of physics: energy is neither created nor destroyed—it simply moves and transforms. This principle holds true in more ways than one. While energy often shifts in ways we understand, it can also leave behind subtle traces that stir our senses and make us question what’s happening around us.
Sensitivity Beyond the Ordinary
Women, in particular, often pick up on subtle changes in their environment. This isn’t just intuition—it’s biology. With more nerve endings in their skin, a heightened sense of smell, and greater sensitivity to touch and temperature, women are often the first to notice when something is off. Whether it’s a faint musty odor, a draft, or that uneasy feeling that something isn’t right, these are often signs that your home’s systems are out of balance, not signs of the supernatural.
The Crying Windows: More Than Just a Spooky Trick
Have you ever noticed your windows weeping, with condensation forming and dripping down the glass? It’s an old trick to write something on foggy glass with your finger—the oils from your finger stick to the glass, and when it gets foggy again, your words or a spooky face reappear. These ghostly marks can show up when someone takes a shower, cooks spaghetti, or on a hot, humid day when your AC kicks on in a leaky house. But this isn’t a haunting; it’s a sign that your home needs better humidity and ventilation control. An energy recovery ventilator (ERV) or heat recovery ventilator (HRV), proper weather sealing, humidity control fans, a whole-house dehumidifier, and a properly sized air conditioning system can take care of that—no more crying windows, and no more eerie messages.
When Heat Moves to Cold: A Reminder from the Stove
When I cook, I notice that the return ducts near my stove cause my lower level to smell like whatever’s for dinner. The warm air from the stove rushes to the cool air in the basement—hot moves to cold, as energy always does. This movement of heat, known as convection, also happens even when the AC unit is not running, as the warm air naturally travels through the AC ducts to the cooler basement. This movement brings along carbon monoxide (CO) produced by burning food and smoke particles, which I can see on my indoor air quality (IAQ) monitors as they detect particulates and gas. This tells me I need to move the returns and install better filtration. Again, the shoemaker’s children go without shoes!
And when I smell mysterious smoky smells in the summer, I know it’s the hot air from outside moving through the chimney and into my chilly basement, reminding me that I didn’t close the damper on the stove pipe after the season was over.
Before You Call the Ghostbusters…
If your home has been feeling a bit too spooky for comfort, it might be time to investigate. Not for ghosts, but for leaks, faulty insulation, and HVAC issues that can create those “haunted” vibes. At Shelter Air, we specialize in restoring balance and bringing comfort and peace of mind back to your home—no paranormal activity required.
And if we do the upgrades—air sealing, insulating, proper ventilation, humidity control, and balanced air conditioning and heating systems—and you still feel something is off-kilter, like chairs sliding across the floor or your daughter’s head rotating 360 degrees, then we can refer you to another type of professional and send over some sage and crystals.
Let’s restore your home’s harmony—because a well-balanced environment is one that feels right, inside and out.
